Week 5 Lesson By Kelly Kirstein
Let's Do This Together: pgs. 40-49
There's nothing better than a day with friends. Hitting the road with your favorite playlist blaring and plans to hit your favorite stops is the perfect way to spend a Saturday.
The drive can be as fun as the destination, until you say something that blows it up. It's hard to understand why you took that jab at your friend, but you did. Now what should've been a fun daytrip has turned into a war where both of you are spewing everything friendship foul you've made in the last month.

If you're trying to understand, it may be time to look at what is happening inside you. While you may not have expressed your anger or resentment towards your friend, there could be something unsaid you need to resolve with her.
Truthfully, it may not have anything to do with her at all. It could be toxic overflow from stress or other situations that you need to emotionally process. This awareness is a powerful tool to help you keep on your self care.
Additional Notes & Thoughts: pg. 49
What to do when you internal world needs some work.
Remember Holy Spirit can help.
Take a moment to reflect on where your thoughts have been migrating lately.
What irritates you?
Are you allowing your mind to ruminate on a particular situation?
Is there something deeper that you have acknowledged?
You may want to draw a picture or describe what your internal world looks like.
If it looks like a toxic waste dump, ask Holy Spirit to give you one thing to work on.
Trying to clean up too much at once will overwhelm you and cause you to shut down.
We are all the work of God’s hand (Isaiah 64:8). With this truth in mind, list unique talents and qualities God gave you. How could you partner with him to use them for good?
Scripture to Help You Heal
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1 NIV
he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, Titus 3:5 NIV
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 1 Peter 2:4 ESV
for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 1 John 5:4 NIV
But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ Romans 9:20 NIV
Mental Health Minute: Your Inner World pgs. 84-85
Recall your earliest memory of being rejected. Ask Holy Spirit to bring light and truth into the memory.
Rejection: not given approval, acceptance, cast off, or unwanted.
Accept: to receive, approve, to think of as normal, or a good response.
The Lord is near to the broken hearted. (Psalm 34:18)
God will never leave or forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)
If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed;(Jeremiah 17:14)
Are there things you don’t like about yourself?
How has disappointment played a part in that?
Take a few moments to ask the Lord to reveal what’s inside you.
Leader Discussion Prompts: Week 5- The Inner Life
Opening (Build Connection)
Think about the road trip story. Have you ever had a fun moment with friends suddenly turn into drama? What happened?
Why do you think small comments can sometimes turn into big conflicts?
Understanding the Inner Life
What does “inner life” mean to you in your own words?
Why do you think what’s happening inside us affects how we act outside?
Can you think of a time when you reacted strongly, but later realized something deeper was going on?
Recognizing Emotional Overflow
The lesson talks about “toxic overflow.” What do you think that means?
What are some signs that you might be holding in emotions instead of dealing with them?
How can stress, insecurity, or past hurt show up in our friendships without us realizing it?
Honesty & Self-Awareness
When conflict happens, is your first instinct to look at yourself or blame the other person? Why do you think that is?
What are some emotions you find hardest to admit (anger, jealousy, rejection, insecurity, etc.)?
Why do you think it can feel scary or uncomfortable to be honest about what’s really going on inside?
Healing What No One Else Sees
What does it look like to invite God into your inner world?
Why is it important to let God heal things that no one else can see?
Have you ever experienced God bringing peace or clarity to something you were struggling with internally?
Friendship & Communication
How can unspoken feelings affect your friendships over time?
What is a healthy way to address something that’s bothering you instead of letting it build up?
How can you tell the difference between something you need to talk to a friend about versus something you need to process with God first?
Practical Application
When you feel triggered or upset, what is one healthy step you can take before reacting?
What are some ways you can take care of your emotional and spiritual health during stressful seasons?
This week, what is one area of your inner life you want to invite God into?
Scripture Reflection
Psalm 34:18 says God is close to the brokenhearted. What does that mean to you personally?
How does knowing God never leaves you (Hebrews 13:5) change how you handle hard emotions?
What truth from this week do you want to hold onto when you feel overwhelmed?
Closing (Heart Check + Prayer Lead-In)
If your inner world had a “condition report” right now, what would it look like (peaceful, overwhelmed, cluttered, hurting, etc.)?
What is one thing you want God to heal, reveal, or help you understand this week?
Leader Tip (Optional to Include)
Encourage girls to share at their comfort level. This topic can bring up deeper emotions, so create a safe, judgment-free space. Remind them that awareness is the first step to healing—and God meets them there with love, not condemnation.
