Life In The Spirit

Establish Your Connection: Close your eyes and connect with the raw power of the Holy Spirit. Let him build a desire to a life in the Spirit connected to him. Ask the Him to give you eyes to see the things that he wants you to surrender to him and the heart to let him have it. Let today be a step towards greater freedom.

Week 8 Intro: Journal Pg. 48

Day 1: Journal Pg. 49

• Context: Ephesians 4:17 begins the section on Christian Living. The verses following explain that unbelievers are in darkened understanding and separated from the life of God due to hardened hearts.

• Question: How does it benefit you to take off your old ways and to exchange them for a renewed spirit?

• Thought: Sinful desires promise happiness, but eventually lead to hurt and misery. Sin promises but does not come through. WHEREAS GOD always comes through...Psalm 145:13 "...The LORD always keeps his promises; he is gracious in all he does."

• Truth=Jesus, which means holiness and righteousness belong to Jesus in the light. Where as Deceit=Satan, which means corrupt lusts and desires belong to the dark kingdom.

• Reflection: If you feel resistance towards surrendering to God, ask Holy Spirit to reveal what is causing the resistance. Write about what comes to mind.

Day 2: Journal Pg. 50

• Commentary: Ellicott's Commentary: Putting on the new man implies the freshness of a higher nature. Being united with Christ in baptism means you have actually put on Christ like new clothes, which helps you deny sinful desires. (Biblehub.org)

• Holiness- Purity, purity of heart, which is a higher grace

• Righteousness- Goodness shown to others, to man and to God

• Question: Contrast the Difference between holy & unholy living as laid out in Ephesians 4:25-32

Day 3: Journal Pg. 51

• Context: Colossians 3 begins talking about Living as those made alive in Christ. It tells you repeatedly to set your minds on things above (higher things). It also explains (lower things) as sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Also listed, anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

• Question: Read Colossians 3:5-13. Make two columns in your journal. Title one column old and the other column new. Then list old behaviors that are supposed to be taken off. List things that we are to put on as believers in Christ.

Day 4: Journal Pg. 52

• Commentary: Benson Commentary- Believers are called to walk in a way that reflects the gospel light, conducting themselves with wisdom and holiness. (Biblehub.org)

• Orgies Definition: a wild party, especially one involving excessive drinking and unrestrained sexual activity.

  • Historical Context: Secret rites used in the worship of (false gods) Bacchus, Dionysus, and other Greek and Roman deities, celebrated with dancing, drunkenness, and singing.(Oxford Languages)

• Question: Looking at the historical context of orgies, describe why people gathered for them and how they might look similar to parties today.

• Question: How do you think people are influenced when they are in the situations scripture warns against?

Day 5: Journal Pg. 53

• Context: The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Romans 13:12-13 NIV

• Commentary: Benson Commentary says, "A strong and beautiful expression for the most intimate union with him, and the being clothed with all the graces which were in him;" (Biblehub.org)

• Question: Draw a T-Chart. Label one column Flesh and the other Spirit. Under each column put in your own words what it means to walk in the flesh and in the other what it means to walk in the Spirit based on what we learned this week.

• Spirit-Jesus, Light, Armor of Light, Image of the Creator, Renewed, New Self, Image of the Creator, Likeness of God, Righteous, Holy
