Chicks Speed Friending: A Fun Icebreaker for Teen Girls
Getting a group of teen girls talking isn’t always as easy as it sounds.
Some girls walk into Bible study ready to talk to everyone. Others come with one friend and stick close to her all night. And if you have new girls joining an established group, it can be especially difficult for them to find their place.
That’s why I love Chicks Speed Friending.
It’s a simple, low-pressure activity that gets girls moving, talking, laughing, and learning something about one another without putting anyone on the spot.
And the best part? It requires almost no preparation.
How Chicks Speed Friending Works
For Larger Groups
Have the girls form two circles, an inner circle and an outer circle, with each girl facing a partner.
Give the each girl a question sheet. They will only ask each person one question. After they have both answered, have the girls in the outer circle move over one person.
Now everyone has a new partner and a new question.
Keep rotating until you have worked through the questions or until everyone has had a chance to meet several different girls.
For Smaller Groups
With a smaller Bible study, pair off girls.
Give each pair about five minutes to work through as many questions as they can.
When time is up, mix up the pairs and start again. This gives girls more time to talk and allows conversations to develop naturally.
Something to Remember Using an Icebreaker for Teen Girls
I created a Chicks Speed Friending worksheet that girls can use during the activity.
Instead of simply answering the questions and moving on, girls write down the name of the person they talked with and her answer.
The questions include things like:
What is your favorite snack?
What is something you’re really good at?
What is one thing you could talk about forever?
What is your dream vacation?
What is something you wish adults understood about middle school?
If you had an entire Saturday with nothing you had to do, what would you do?
What is something you’re looking forward to this year?
If you could master any skill or hobby overnight, what would you pick?

Why Activities Like This Matter
Icebreakers aren't just about filling time at the beginning of Bible study. They help create connection.
A girl who feels like she belongs is more likely to come back. She’s more likely to participate. She’s more likely to eventually share what’s really going on in her life.
And sometimes something as simple as discovering, “Hey, she likes that too!” is the beginning of a friendship.
For mentors, activities like this also give us an opportunity to observe.
Who seems comfortable?
Who is hanging back?
Who already has several friends?
Who might need a little extra help finding her place?
You don't have to force connection. Sometimes you just need to create opportunities for it to happen.
A Tip for Mentors
If you have girls who have been part of your group for a while, ask them to help you welcome the newer girls.
You don't need to give them an official title or make a big announcement. Simply pull a few girls aside before the meeting and say:
“Will you help me make sure nobody feels like she doesn't belong tonight?”
That small responsibility can help your returning girls begin seeing themselves differently too. They aren't just attending Bible study anymore. They're helping create the kind of community they want to be part of.
Make Room for Friendship
You don't need an elaborate event to help teen girls connect.
Using a simple icebreaker for teen girls, gives them a reason to move outside their usual friend group, a few good questions to get the conversation started, and a welcoming environment where everyone has a place.
Then give them room to talk.
Sometimes that's all it takes to help a room full of girls start becoming a community.
